The rules for this post are the same as when I picked my
personal winners of every Best Picture prize. While I’ve seen all of the
respective films that caused filmmakers to win the Best Director Oscar, I
certainly haven’t seen all of the nominees. So we’ll start my winners at 1939
and carry on down.
The Academy’s winners are in bold, while my picks are highlighted. And, just for trivia’s sake, I matched the Academy’s
choice for Best Director 29 out of the 72 years I’m considering. A little better
than my 23/72 Best Pictures. Enjoy!

How much more amazing can you get? You're a walking, blogging encyclopedia. You have so many great choices that I cannot pinpoint which ones I agree with the most. Suffice to say I'm so happy that you'd hand Lynch the Oscar for Mulholland Drive. The closest I come to disagreeing is Carol Reed winning over Billy Wilder, but they both turned out amazing films that year, so.
ReplyDeleteHa, you rock man. This comment made my week. Seriously, thank you for coming by so often and saying such nice things.
DeleteLynch didn't have a shot at hell at winning, but I preferred him (or Altman, or Scott) over Howard.
Sunset Boulevard or The Third Man... that's a tough one. Love the hell out of both of those films.
OK, let me see how I'm going to do this:

We're pretty much in agreement for the most part. Still, I can't believe the following haven't been nominated: Powell/Pressburger, Robert Rossellini, Jean-Luc Godard, Yasujiro Ozu, Jim Jarmusch, Lars von Trier, and Robert Bresson among many others.
I seriously love when you post your lists like this. I love comparing our tastes. And I agree, we're pretty much in line here. Even where we don't share the same picks, I agree with the ones you chose.
DeleteI'm stunned that those filmmakers never received nominations either. I mean Ozu... come on!
I would have had Bertolucci as my winner for '73.
ReplyDeleteGreat, great film he made there. But Cries and Whispers... that's like my god.
DeleteI would still go Apartment over Psycho, even though it means Hitch would lose to Wilder three times in a row. Sad but true. Also, Mockingbird over Arabia - one of the Best Book to Movie adaptations I know and needs to be recognised. I would once again keep Slumdog and LOtR out but I do have my problems with both the Malick wins. Not my cup of tea I guess.
ReplyDeleteBut 3 for Lumet, 3 for Scorsese, 2 for Wilder and Fellini, Virginia Woolf and Social Network recognised. We are Good !!
Hey man, we certainly can't agree on them all, but I'm glad we fall in line on a number of them! In terms of Slumdog, I think the 2008 Oscar year was a poor representation of the best films from that year. Not a particularly strong year anyway, but Slumdog wouldn't be my first or sixth choice for best film of the 2008.
DeleteGreat stuff man. I agree with 46 of these, or 64%! Since you like comparing, here's where I differ:
ReplyDelete1946: Frank Capra
1948: Laurence Olivier
1950: Billy Wilder
1954: Alfred Hitchcock
1958: Richard Brooks
1959: Billy Wilder
1960: Billy Wilder
1967: Arthur Penn (very close to Nichols though)
1968: John Schlesinger
1975: Stanley Kubrick
1976: Alan J. Pakula
1981: Steven Spielberg
1985: Peter Weir (Need to see Ran!)
1986: Woody Allen
1991: Jonathan Demme
1994: Krzysztof Kieslowski
1996: Mike Leigh (Coen not far behind)
2000: Ridley Scott (I know, I know. ;) )
2002: Pedro Almodovar
2003: Sofia Coppola
2004: Martin Scorsese
2005: George Clooney (barely over Spielberg)
2006: Martin Scorsese
2007: Julian Schnabel
2010: Darren Aronofsky
2011: Martin Scorsese (by a nose)
And I still love all of your picks (except 2000, but oh well!). Was very close to choosing some of your picks, namely Aronofsky, Almodovar, and Leigh. Solid stuff all around though.
DeleteThis whole article practically exudes perfection. I completely agree with Lumet being overlooked for most of his nominations, how Rocky won best picture against Network is baffling. And thank you so much for choosing PTA over the Coen brothers, the Academy can really screw up sometimes, I literally cry every time I watch videos of that year's Oscar, TWBB being snubbed in so many categories.
ReplyDeleteI do vary on some choices:
1952: John Ford
1969: John Schlesinger
1971: Stanley Kubrick
1991: Jonathan Demme
2006: Martin Scorsese
But other than that, your choices are impeccable. Also, if Dalton Trumbo was nominated for Johnny Got His Gun in 1971, I would have gone with him, but he wasn't.
Great article, always a good read from you (:
Nikanor, again, thanks so much for your kind words here, and on Twitter. I didn't have plans to write this post, but after your tweet, how could I not?!
DeleteLumet really should've won at least ONE Oscar. Baffling indeed. And yeah, I love No Country For Old Men, but it ain't no TWBB.
Love the five picks you listed. Hard to argue against them - all solid efforts.
Thanks again for stopping by and commenting!
Howard winning over Lynch is just ridiculous. Even more ridiculous is that it was MD's single nomination. I'd however give the win to Howard for Frost/Nixon over Boyle - I really dislike Slumdog Millionare and I usually like Boyle's films, especially his early stuff.
ReplyDeleteAgree, the lack of love for Mulholland Dr. was absurd. Just too out there for the Academy, I guess.
DeleteI actually think Frost/Nixon is Howard's best film, so I can get with you there. 2008 was an overal weak year though.
Still can't believe that Hitch never won a Best Director. I would be hard pressed to discuss the worthiness of many of those older selections.
ReplyDeleteIt is nuts that Hitch never won. It's as if they kept thinking, "Nah, next time." After so many of those, there wasn't any next time. Shame.
