Listen: the Nymphomaniac Matineecast

Last week, amidst a massive Los Angeles blackout, I was fortunate enough to participate in Ryan McNeil’s exceptional weekly podcast, the Matineecast. The subject of our conversation was Lars von Trier’s latest film, Nymphomaniac. Ryan and I discussed both volumes of the film in-depth, so for those who haven’t seen von Trier’s latest trip into psychological hell, be cautious for spoilers.

In addition to Nymphomaniac, Ryan and I discussed the sexist films of all time, the movies that impacted me most as a child, and how I may or may not be insane for watching the same two films at least once a week.

I had a great time being part of the Matineecast. Ryan is an impeccable host who makes his guests feel immediately at ease, even the ones sweating it out in their pitch black apartment in 90-degree heat.

I hope you’ll spend part of your day listening to what we had to say!

  1. Very cool man, interesting to hear your thoughts on both films like that. It seems, to me, that you liked Part II more than you let on in your initial review. I was really intrigued by your thoughts on "The Silent Duck" chapter in the film in particular. Jamie Bell is just fierce in that one! Even if you didn't dig it as much as some other chapters, I still think we can agree about his performance!

Also nice call recommending the Oshima film - not exactly a great film but great to hear you bring it up lol!

    1. Hey man, thanks for listening! You know, the more I verbally talked about Vol. II, yeah, the more I appreciated it. Honestly, when I wrote that review, I was just so tired of living in the world of Nymphomaniac, if that makes sense. I still prefer Vol. I, but I may have been a tad hard on Vol. II in my review.

I don't really think In the Realm of the Senses is a great film either, but wow... I STILL can't believe they got away with that. Insane.

  3. Great great podcast! It was really fun and entertaining to listen to your impressions on the film. It was interesting that Ryan and you had different experiences with watching the two parts. I feel the same you do about the second part, and I watched it a couple of nights after the first one. Oh and loved all the Shame mentions as you know I loved it a lot too.

Oh and I've just seen your comment on my last post. I also love shots of the back of people's heads. It's a curious thing but I think that's why I love a lot Tarkovsky, and Malick's work for instance, as he uses that a lot. I also like visually Andrea Arnold's films 'cause she has a great way of shooting her characters from the back, and Sean Bobbitt's work as photographer. And of course when I say Bobbitt I'm thinking of his work with Steve McQueen, which is amazing.

    1. Hey Mara, thanks so much for listening! And, yet again, I find myself more drawn to your personal tastes. I LOVE that you also enjoy shots of the backs of heads. Andrea Arnold has been a huge inspiration on my filmmaking career. I really identify with her style and choice of story. And Sean Bobbitt... yeah, the man is just that good. I was so bummed that he didn't land an Oscar nom for his 12 Year a Slave work. That man deserves endless accolades.
