What a long road this has been. I wrote the script for my first feature film, WAIT, in January 2013. We filmed it in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. from November 2013 through January 2014. Reshoots and additional scene shooting took place in June 2014. WAIT hit the festival circuit from December 2014 through June 2015. I submitted it for distribution on iTunes and Amazon in August 2016. And now here we are, August 2017, and WAIT is finally ready to be viewed.
I’m going to talk about WAIT a lot over the next few weeks, with a deep dive into my experience of making a microbudget feature film (hint: it isn’t easy). But for now, I’m going to leave this post here for a while and let people watch the film, should they please. The film is 72 minutes long, which isn’t a big time commitment, but if you decide to watch WAIT, I certainly hope you feel that is time well spent.

ReplyDeleteThanks man, you're the best. Next is more feature length script writing. Making and releasing Wait occupied so much of my free time, so I haven't been able to write as much as I'd like over these past few years. I've finished one script I'm really proud of. Going to tidy that up and see where it goes. Upcoming film stuff will be a few shorts I shot and edited, and another I directed. All coming out soon!

Thanks Chris! (sigh) It's pretty damn silly that something as big as Amazon can't work for ALL countries, but that's just how it is. I'm hoping iTunes works for people who are not in the U.S. If it doesn't, I'll put the film on Vimeo On Demand, which can be viewed by anyone, anywhere (I haven't done that yet because it's very expensive).

DeleteOkie-dokie, literally just finished watching it, so here's my 100% honest opinion:
DeleteIt's good.
Cons: The camerawork and editing, at very few times, gets a little choppy, but that's a given taking into account this is one of your first serious forays into the field. The camera quality's a little meh (Let me guess, Canon?) but again that's a given considering budget. Also, it's a tad short.
The pros: Despite the first con, the camerawork and editing was pretty good and you had some interesting mise-en-scene ideas for the most part. The acting's solid throughout. The dialogue's natural, the story's engaging. Overall, I enjoyed it, and look forward to seeing your future work. With some growth, a few years down the line, you could soar.

Thanks so much for watching, Nickolas. I hear you on the camerawork/camera quality. I shot most of this on the Canon 7D, which has a nice look for its price, but I certainly wouldn't shoot another feature with it. But, yes, for the time and budget constrictions we had, I think the final product is of worth. In terms of the camerawork itself... sections of the film can be difficult for me to watch, because I have grown so much as a cinematographer since I shot WAIT. But hey, art lives in a time capsule. It speaks to a certain time and place, and I'll always look back on WAIT and see where I was at artistically and technically at that time.

DeleteHi Alex, been a long time since I've been here but pleased to say that I've finally had a chance to watch WAIT, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's really well-directed, beautifully shot, and solidly acted. I can tell that it has been a labour of love for you and it really shows. I'll try and put together a proper review on Letterboxd but need to give it some time to digest first, and will probably give it another viewing. It's really awesome to see the progression from Earrings (which I loved) to this, and I'm really excited to see where you go next. You have been and continue to be an absolute inspiration to us all, dude. Keep on doing what you're doing. (Btw, thank you for making this available on Vimeo even though it was presumably expensive to do so - it was the only way I was able to access it, and I (and I'm sure many others) was happy to pay via that medium).
