WAIT: Now Available on Vimeo OnDemand

At some point during the making of a movie, the movie takes on a life of its own. It’s born, it lives and it demands constant attention. Last month, when I released my feature film, WAIT, on iTunes and Amazon, I assumed my years-long relationship with the movie was officially out of my hands. After all, when you hand a movie over to audiences, it is no longer yours, it’s theirs.

But I was wrong. Shortly after I announced the film’s release, many of my dedicated (supportive, awesome, loyal, kind) followers who live outside of America said they could not access the film. So after some weeks of scrambling and deciding on the best streaming outlet for foreign markets, I’ve uploaded the film to Vimeo OnDemand.

Vimeo OnDemand has grown immeasurably since I first researched it as a distribution option for WAIT a few years ago. It’s clean, easy to use, and most importantly, allows anyone, anywhere (in any country) to watch the film whenever they’d like. Click here to watch WAIT on Vimeo OnDemand, or click the “From $2.99” button in the top right of the embedded trailer below.

Thanks again to everyone who has been supportive during this process. I hope more of you are able to watch the film now! Enjoy!

    1. So i did get some time to finally watch it tonight and i really enjoyed it. I was surprised when it ended because i was so invested the run time just flew by. The ending really got to me as well. I was actually in a strangely similar situation as Dylan a few years back with my father dying and my girlfriend breaking up with me at pretty much the same time. It didn't happen exactly like in the movie, but it was still really strange to see. Anyway, the performances where all good, but Murielle Zuker really stole the movie for me. Especially in her last scene. She was fantastic. And was that argument at the end all one take? Because that was a really impressive scene. I also really enjoyed the music. I love that electronic style. I really think you showed a lot of talent here. Writing, directing and cinematography. I can't wait to see what you do next and watch you grow as a filmmaker. I only rented the movie now because i don't really watch movies that much on my laptop, but if you ever release it on blu-ray, i will buy it day one. This is definitely a movie i want to watch again. Sorry if this was a bit rambly. It's pretty late here so i should probably get some sleep now.

    2. Wow, thanks so much for this comment. I'm really sorry you went through something so awful a few years ago, but I'm glad you were able to connect to the material. Life is funny like that; it's all about perspective. Thanks for all the kind words about the movie. Murielle was a force of nature in the best possible way. I'll always be indebted to her work in that scene. And yeah, that scene was captured in one take, then edited for time. I lit the space so that the actors could move anywhere they wanted, within the living room and kitchen. But, for continuity sake, I knew that I would only be able to use footage from one take, because depending on where they moved, it wouldn't match up from take to take. So each take was 18 minutes long, which we shot straight through with no breaks. It was like filming a real argument. We shot it 5 times, back to back, and everything in the film is from take 3.

In terms of physical media, Blu-Rays are so damn expensive to make properly. You essentially have to hire a company to create them (with menus, special features, disc layout, etc), and another company to actually make them (burning the discs, printing images on the disc, packaging the discs, etc). I may make a few for the sake of prosperity, but I don't know if I'll ever sell them (simply because it's damn near impossible to make your money back on them.) But thank you so much again for taking the time to watch the movie and commenting!

  2. That is awesome. BTW, any plans for a physical release of the film in the future? I'm a traditionalist when it comes to films as I like to have a physical copy of a film with special features and such.

    1. Thanks man! Physical media is tough for such a small-budget film. Blu-Rays are so damn expensive to make properly. You have to hire a company to create them, and another to actually make them. Very, very costly, but if I do make a few, I will certainly let you know. I'm a traditionalist in that way as well, but damn, I wish Blu-Rays were a more viable option for microbudget films.

  3. Finally saw it, honestly didn't know what to expect, because feature film debuts can be rough. But what i saw, was a well realized, mature and challenging movie that perfectly knew it's strengths. Can't congratulate you enough, i'm honestly jealous. I mean, how did you get those perfomances??? I now really hope you'll do more, because i feel that you can go bigger and better.
Special thank you to all four (actually five) main actors, especially Murielle Zuker (there was some Oscar clip stuff in the climactic scene). I love seeing fresh faces in film, that are so confident and likeable.
    More, please!

    Mike.

    1. Mike, thank you SO MUCH for everything. Watching the movie, commenting and tweeting about it - really very kind of you.

A lot of very talented directors have said this, but directing really is all about casting. If you find actors who connect with the material, and have tons of natural, raw talent, then you can generate great performances, even in a microbudget film. So happy you enjoyed Murielle's performance. She is such a strong actor. Thanks again man!

  5. Managed to rent Wait on vimeo and enjoyed watching. Grateful you made the film available. For me, the two best scenes were the discussion of whether Dylan should go to the hospital or not, and also the scene in the car. Will write a review soon (Dell on Movies already posted a full review)

Is the interview in which Claire (Catherine Warner) talks about receiving a different script for Bliss autobiographical? (in regards to the making of Earrings in which Warner also starred, I wondered if this really happened!)

By the way, do you intend to add Wait to letterboxd? I could only find Earrings on there.

    1. Hey Chris, thanks so much for taking the time to watch the movie and review it on your site. I really appreciate it!

Interesting question about the Bliss-Earrings-Wait link there. I suppose subconsciously some of that is autobiographical, but it wasn't really that cut and dry. During the preproduction and production stages of Earrings, Catherine and I kept expanding the scope to make it bigger. It was originally a two scene movie that was going to be about 7 minutes long. So we did grow it a bit, but Catherine was always aware of what was going on haha. However, there is a little easter egg in Earrings about Wait, if you ever want to give Earrings another watch. I put it in there to motivate me to make Wait.

Good call on Letterboxd. It was so easy to add a title on there 5 years ago. Had to go through a bunch of steps to do it this time around. Hopefully it'll be up soon!

  6. God I'm so sorry I still haven't seen this. My hand is fucked up right now so I fear operating a credit card but once it's better I'm definitely buying this and making a special post about it.

  7. Hey Alex, I’m a senior in high school and I’m pretty sure I want to go into studying films. I find it very interesting all the little details that go into the production of a film, it really interest me how everyone has their own part to play. Anyways, I wanted to see if you could give me a little direction as to what I should do after high school? Where can I learn about different jobs I’m movie making? Which schools are good? I’d love to have a conversation with you about it. If you can get back to me is really appreciate it.

    1. Tough, tough subject here. I'm going to begin posting a series of posts today about how I made Wait, so that may help you some. But if you want to email me, I will respond as quickly as I can. In short: there are no easy answers. There is no clear path when you're chasing a dream. You have to work and fight to express your artistic vision. Start creating now, as soon as you can, with whatever resources are at your disposal (including an iPhone). Don't sit around thinking about creating, thinking about the path, thinking about the right and wrong next steps. Instead, start creating as soon as you can. Email me if you want!

  8. I finally saw this! I'm so sorry it took so long. I wanted to watch it with my co-director and we finally got the time to do.

First of all, the film is stunning to look at. I LOVE the colours! I thought Murielle Zuker was really great. Her big scene was heartbreaking. I'll be fully honest- it took me a little while to fully get into the film but it only got better from there. Congrats and well done. Can't wait to see what you do next!

    1. Thank you SO MUCH for watching it. I really appreciate that. I'm so glad you liked the look of the film and dug the colors, I definitely spent a lot of time with color themes and palettes on this flick.

My intention was to set the film up in a way in which it starts slow, then steadily builds in pace after the "Months Later" title card. It sounds like that was your experience with the movie, which is great! Thanks again for watching! Very excited to see what you do next as well.
